Amethyst is a rich purple gemstone which belongs to the quartz family. It's the most precious and valuable member of the quartz minerals, and is widely recognized as February's birthstone. Amethyst gets its color from iron and aluminum impurities, and ranges in color from deep purple, violet and lavender to a pale mauve.
While the most important deposits of amethyst are found in Brazil, the gemstone can also be found in Arizona (USA), Austria, Bolivia, Canada, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Namibia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Russia, Uruguay and Zambia.
Not only does amethyst have historical roots as a royal color and sign of power, it's also known in the Christian church as "the stone of bishops" and to protect against drunkenness. In fact, wine goblets used to be carved from amethyst because of this belief, as the Greek word "amethystos" translates into "not drunken". Historically, it was worn to prevent against intoxication, and today amethyst is the symbol of sobriety. Farmers also wore amethyst to protect their crops from locusts and hail, and Leonardo da Vinci even believed that amethyst had the power to control evil thoughts, to quicken intelligence, and to make men shrewd in business matters.
Wearing amethyst is said to make the person wearing it gentle and amiable. Its metaphysical properties can be attributed to aiding in body aches, spiritual upliftment, courage, healing and happiness.
