Citrine, a variety of quartz, is a beautifully vibrant yellow gemstone. It's a transparent stone and ranges in color from pale yellow to deep amber, and is in fact one of the most rare forms of quartz. The name citrine actually comes from the French word "citrin" which means lemon, and the stone is mostly found in Brazil, as well as Russia, Colorado, Bolivia, Madagascar, Myanmar, Canada, Spain and Sri Lanka. The team at Elizabeth Sarah Collections uses this stone in many of our designs for its golden shimmer and the fact that it naturally pairs well with other gemstones, and compliments nearly every color on the spectrum.
While we know citrine today as a beautiful and well sought after gemstone that is also the official birthstone for November, it's believed that the ancient Romans were the first to wear citrine as jewelry. It became popular during the Romantic Period in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, during which this time the Europeans thought that the gemstone held magical powers against evil thoughts and snake venom.
Citrine is also believed to be the "Stone of Success" according to Chinese legends, and that it increases intellectual capabilities, broadens the mind, and produces emotions and thoughts of abundance. It's also known as the "Merchant Stone" because it is associated wealth and affluence, and shopkeepers often keep this stone near their cash register to maximize profits.
According to ancient mythology, Citrine is attributed with two divine deities: Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest who is associated with productivity; and Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war who is associated with power.
It's known that citrine is a rather affordable gemstone, and it's even used frequently as an alternative to the pricey Topaz. The golden earthy and skin-toned hues that are usually not found in other gemstones make citrine the most popular form of quartz.
