The Indian Head penny, minted from 1859 to 1909, features a portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress on the obverse.

Designed by James Barton Longacre, this classic bronze coin is highly collected.

Early versions (1859–1864) were made of a copper-nickel blend, making them thicker and heavier. Due to a nickel shortage during the Civil War, the Mint changed the composition to 95% copper and 5% bronze and zinc in 1864.
