Mother of pearl has a distinct opulent shimmer similar to moonstone and opal, and even has a multi-color effect in certain lighting.

Meant to resemble to magical glint of the sun shining down on the ocean waves, our mother of pearl crescent necklaces can be worn dressed up or down and for any occasion. 

Mother of pearl is the common name for nacre, the iridescent coating found inside the shells of mollusks which coats and protects them from parasites, predators and other foreign objects.

The most common source of this material are abalone and pearl oysters. Today, mother of pearl is most commonly used (in addition to jewelry) as an inlay in musical instruments and furniture.

You may be wondering what the difference is between mother of pearl and pearl (We even had to look this one up, for science of course!).

A pearl is also composed of nacre, and when it's formed, a layer of nacre is deposited around a tiny particle that becomes lodged in a mollusk. Eventually, this nacre builds around the small object and becomes a pearl. 

Although the outer coating of the pearl is nacre, it is not referred to as mother of pearl, as it has different qualities in texture, size, color and natural makeup.

Mother of pearl is also more common than pearl and can be found all over the world in both saltwater and freshwater. 

Mother of pearl has been used since the ancient Egyptians, and has been found in East Asian and Islamic art forms. Mother of pearl became popular in the west during the Victorian Era, traditionally to decorate household items such as knife handles, jewelry boxes and buttons. 

The healing properties of mother of pearl include prosperity and soothing, motherly protection from negative energy and love.
